Illegal discharges continue to pose a serious threat to protected natural areas in Flanders. This study investigates a suspected contamination in the Rottenbos nature reserve in Leuven, managed by Natuurpunt. Through targeted sampling and photometric analysis, key pollutants such as ammonium, phosphates, and anionic surfactants were identified, indicating an ongoing illegal discharge via a drainage pipe. The findings highlight the environmental risks of eutrophication, oxygen depletion, and biodiversity loss, and underline the importance of monitoring, enforcement, and concrete remedial actions. Protecting vulnerable ecosystems requires vigilance - every action counts in keeping nature clean.
